| Where Da Lettuce At? |
I've been spending an inordinate amount of time watching the baby desert tortoises (torti?), eat. It's kind of like watching fish in an aquarium as they stagger around their own little vivarium sniffing at the carefully pureed kale-mustard-zucchini-yellow squash-carrot blend I actually mixed up in the food processor. Thing is, they don't much like it. They want LETTUCE. It's kind of like a little kid eating only mac 'n' cheese. I worry about them getting enough calcium, too much protein, too little light, too much light, too little water, too much water, are they drowning
in the water...
... so when they actually
eat the puree, I am
way excited! Got out the camera, snapped photos, took the photos to the bank to show Jill (the branch manager who's own tortoise is currently hibernating in her pantry). Oh, yeah, I'm easily entertained, yet neurotic, nonetheless.
I *might* switch to fresh greens and/or puree every-other-day and let them eat their dry "tortoise chow" in the interim. I'll try a new recipe - mix it up by adding some broccoli. When it's a little bit warmer I'll take them outside to "graze." I think they'll like that.

Right now, they seem so small and vulnerable. It's hard to believe that they'll likely outlive me. I'll need to set up a trust fund.
Clarity, on the other hand, just pops up her head from her mulch when she feels like a mouse. She's a serpentine couch potato. All she needs is a TV remote and a beer. After her mouse, she'll sniff around a bit like she wants another one, and then plop back under her rock or her mulch and I'll see her about five days later at mouse-o-clock.

Ironically, the cat is the easiest. Give him some crunchies and his blankie and he's pretty well good to go. (I don't know
where he goes, but it's probably better that way.)

Actually, Tree Man can probably stake a claim to "lowest maintenance" of all. Unless his hat blows away or an eyeball falls off, he's not very demanding.
